Electric Vehicle

Executive summary by James Harley

The crazy rising of gasoline prices, the environmental concerns about global warming, and the imminent shortage of conventional fuels, increasingly people are looking for other solution about other sources of power. Most for households having over vehicle, fuel expenses have indeed become a major issue. Thinking about its efficiency, safety, and afforddability, electric cars conversion appears to be the best solution.

Electric Vehicle

The electrical vehicle so different than conventional fuel- vehicle in that in lieu of a gasoline engine, the Electric Vehicle has an electric motor that drives the vehicle. The motor is the important key part of the electrical vehicle as it causes it to move. It determines the acceleration of the vehicle in lieu of the engine in conventional cars.

The electricity vehicle runs because the method involves the removal of the internal combustion engine in order for it to get replaced with an electric motor. Since the engine is gone, all the connecting or associated parts such as the exhaust-pipe, radiator, fuel lines, fuel pump, and gas tank are to be replace function as well.

To move the automobile forward, the motor is connected to the existing transmission method. To power the motor, a series of deep cycle batteries are used. An average EV would require Electric Vehicle to fifteen units of batteries. On a full charge, a do-it-yourself electric automobile can travel up to 150 miles.

The real mileage of the electric vehicle will be contingent on the power of the electrical motor, the charging state of the batteries, the, and driving condition also the weight of the automobile. The basic electric automobile kit comes with a motor, acontrol mechanism, and a battery .

This Decade about hybrid vehicle so don’t worried about hybrid car insurance especially electric car insurance, it easy to find.

Electric Vehicle Insurance

By Ujang Jangar

Hybrid vehicle now become popular to be personal, family or company car, why this is because most people more understand about need better living place and the most popular reason is fuel price become higher and higher. Hybrid vehicle technology can be answer about that.

Electric-Car-Insurance

How About Hybrid Vehicle and insurance?, if somebody drive a car without insurance it shame with running without pant. It’s mean so embraces and danger. So how about car insurance company will be cover this vehicle variant, doesn’t matter for now hybrid car will cover with many car insurance company but you must know this car have more expensive insurance than conventional car.

If you are an Electric car owner, that is mean you must looking for car insurance for hybrid vehicle, make some observe to make compare how much rate you must pay and how about every car insurance company coverage.

Get Discount

Car insurance company will give you discount?, yes of course but we must now how the car insurance make analyze about the risk factor.

The first step choice the car insurance company familiar with electrical vehicle so you no need time to explain to them about your vehicle, just give some important information about so easy to maintained and very save this vehicle don’t forget tell him you are a good driver with no bad record. Believe me you can get discount and don’t be surprise you can get good price. Do that trick to minimal 3 of car insurance company before you choice one.

For the basic information about electric car is about the battery, you know many people doubt about this thing but this technology is running to forward very fast now, the battery will be replace after 6-8 years.

So nothing reason to buy conventional car for this time. Hybrid technology still the best one for these decade, and easy for you to get insurance. Go drive and safety.

Are there any savings? Some of these questions will be answered below to help you determine if this technology is ready for you.

There are three types of EV’s available. But, are they ready for prime time? You decide.

1. Dedicated EV- Electric only

2. Extended EV Electric with gasoline engine

3. Plug-in hybrids

Dedicated EV is an electric only vehicle. There are four models available or expected out by 2012.

Nissan Leaf is a four-door five-passenger hatch back pure battery electric vehicle. It has an expected range of 100 miles between charges, which Nissan says is sufficient for 90% of Americans. It takes eight hours or more to fully charge with a 220-volt outlet and longer with a 110-volt outlet. The starting price is estimated at $33,600. The warranty on the battery and related hardware is eight years or 100,000 miles. The estimated cost to replace the battery is $18,000. Expected availability is December 2010.

Mini E Cooper is a two-door two-passenger pure battery electric vehicle. It has an expected range of 156 miles under ideal conditions. Most drivers get about 100 miles between charges. It takes approximately 3 hours to charge with a 240 volt 48 Amp outlet or 4.5 hours with a 32-amp outlet. If using a 110 volt 12 amp outlet it takes approximately 26.5 hours to charge. This is a two-passenger vehicle because the battery takes up the entire back seat. The regenerative braking takes a little getting used to, the system kicks in as soon as the driver lifts his foot off the accelerator pedal. This causes the vehicle to begin slowing before the brake pedal is applied. BMW is leasing these vehicles as part of a special program. They are developing a replacement based on the BMW 1 Series, which is due out in 2011.

Ford Focus EV is a four-door sedan based on the redesigned 2012 Focus. The prototypes have a 23-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery pack with an estimated range of 100 miles. Charge time is approximately 6 hours on a 220-volt charger.

Tesla Roadster first started selling in 2008. It has a price tag of $111,000, it is a two-seater sports car. It is based on the Lotus Elise with a fiberglass body. This car is a rocket, it can accelerate from zero to 60 in under four seconds. It has a range of 245 miles with a massive 53-kilowatt-hour battery pack. Full charge takes 3.5 hours on a proprietary 240-Volt 70 amp charger. It has a very stiff and jarring ride with a very basic interior. It is awkward climbing into the cockpit because of the tall wide sill. The loud battery-cooling fans emit a constant roar behind you. Tesla is developing a lower cost $50,000+ model S sedan expected to be released in 2012.

Extended EV electric with gasoline engine

The Chevrolet Volt is the only model that falls within this category. It is a four-door four-passenger sedan. The Volt does not have a rear bench seat like most vehicles because of the T shaped battery pack. It has a range of 40 miles on electric power. GM states this is sufficient for 75% of commuters. Once the battery level drops below a certain level, a small gas engine kicks in to provide enough electric power to run the electric motor. The overall range is 300 miles before filling the gas tank or charging the batteries. GM says the Volt can run with never being plugged in. However, it will impact the fuel economy. Charge time for the Volt is four hours on 220 volt or eight to 10 hours on 110-volt outlets. The Volt charges faster than the dedicated electric vehicles because it has a smaller battery. The battery warranty for the Volt is the same as the Nissan leaf. The warranty on the battery and related hardware is eight years or 100,000 miles. The starting price for the Volt is $41,000. The replacement cost of the Lithium-ion battery is approximately $8000, which is $10,000 less than the Leaf. The electric motor produces 149 horse power and 273 pound-feet of torque. Those torque numbers are about the same as a V-6 engine.

Plug-in Hybrids

There are no manufactures producing plug-in Hybrids as of this writing. However, there are some aftermarket companies producing aftermarket add on batteries for the Toyota Prius. The extra cost of these add on batteries is approximately $11,000. This added battery boosts the gas mileage by approximately 50% for the first 35 miles. Once the battery is depleted, the Prius reverts back to its regular hybrid operation at which time the fuel economy drops slightly below that of a standard Prius because of the added battery weight. Toyota is field-testing the plug-in Prius for commercial use. There are no expected models for retail customers until 2012.

Some things to consider before purchasing an EV

What are your driving habits? What are the longest distances you will be traveling? When driving a pure electric vehicle; if the battery runs out completely with no charging stations available you will be stranded. With the long charge times, it will take some time to make the vehicle usable again. This is where the extended range Volt becomes more practical. Filling up the gas tank is faster than waiting for the battery to charge.

Using other electrical features like the Air Conditioning, Heating, Lights, Wind Shield Wipers and playing Music; engineers say this can consume approximately 50% of the battery power which will reduce the vehicles range.

Lithium-ion technology battery life is undetermined, however, the eight year 100,000 mile warranty on the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf do give some piece of mind.

Cost savings

An EV costs about.04 cents per-mile (depending on the electric rates in your area). You can compare that to a Toyota Corolla at 30 mpg paying $2.80 per gallon, the per-mile cost is.09 cents.

Government incentives

The first 200,000 EV buyers from each automaker are eligible for $7,500 federal tax credit. There are also some regional incentives; for instance, California will offer an additional $5000 tax credit for “zero emission” vehicles. Check your area for local incentives.

To conclude, there are four 100% electric vehicles available by 2012. One extended range vehicle, which could be zero emission if your driving range is within the available battery level. And there are the more common Hybrids, like the Prius which runs mostly on regular gas but with great mileage and with the future pilot of the Prius as a plug in, this vehicle will eventually fall within the extended range category.

Is the EV ready for prime time? Your driving habits and needs will tell. How far do you drive daily, can you plugin at work? Are most of your driving needs around town? This is where the greatest benefits will be realized. What part of the country do you live in? Will an EV work in your environment? Parts of the country with extreme heat or cold will require more battery usage to heat or cool the vehicle, which will reduce the range. Will this reduce your cost savings?

With government incentives, the cost of one of these EV’s can be reduced to a more acceptable range, keeping the cost closer to a conventional gas vehicle. There are also reduce maintenance costs with an EV, no oil changes and the electric motors are mostly maintenance free.

Beat the Traffic with an Electric Scooter

by Thomas White

I know it may sound funny, but really, an electric scooter is a great alternative to your daily basic transportation needs–whether to the local store, work, school, mall, or wherever within your local community. Did you know that in some countries like Europe, and some parts of the US, scooters are largely used as a common means of transportation? You would be surprised at the sophistication, style and speed of the recently-developed scooter models as they are really geared up to get you there, wherever “there” is.

electric-scooter

An electric scooter (similar to an electric bike) is designed to carry a single person and runs on a motor that is powered by rechargeable batteries. There are many different types of scooters largely available in the worldwide market today, depending on the speed and functionality you are looking for. If you would consider riding a bike to get to where you are going, then a scooter by far is better and is as eco-friendly as bikes. It is much less tiring to ride a scooter as it is electrically-powered and there are a lot of affordable scooter models available, too, if you are working on a budget.

Scoters are very compact and light, so you can easily dodge through traffic in style with one of these modern beauties. And though it is relatively unsafe to use than regular four-wheeled vehicles, you can take extra precautions with the gear you wear and the way you drive. Richmond and New York City are the best examples of densely-populated metros that employ wide use of scooters. It is very easy to learn and operate a scooter in case you are concerned about riding one; in all respects, it’s even simpler than riding a bike. So why compete with the traffic when you can beat it with your very own electric scooter?

How a Hybrid Electric Vehicle Works

By Joseph Then

A hybrid electric vehicle is a vehicle that has both electric power and gasoline power that it uses for operation. A hybrid is a cross between an all gasoline and all electric vehicle. The idea of a hybrid is to increase gas mileage and reduce pollution.

Hybrid electric vehicle

A hybrid electric vehicle features both a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The gasoline motor gets its power from traditional gasoline. The electric motor gets its power from a battery.

The motor and the engine work together to provide power for the vehicle. The electric motor runs the car when it is cruising and decelerating. The gasoline engine powers the car when extra power is needed, such as when accelerating.

The difference in the gasoline engine from a traditional vehicle is that the gasoline engine is much smaller, as it is only providing a small amount of power to the vehicle.

All other aspects of the hybrid electric vehicle are basically the same. The same design of the body of the car, the interior and the same inner workings of the starter, transmission and other operating systems.

A hybrid is going to use the gasoline engine much less because it will use the electric motor to its full capacity. Therefore a hybrid will use far less gasoline and produce far less emissions than a vehicle that uses gasoline power only.

The biggest downfall with a hybrid is that since they are newer vehicles many mechanics can not work on them and most repairs and work needs to be done at the dealership. Parts may also be slightly more expensive.

However, on the upside, hybrid vehicles depreciate, lose value, slower than gasoline vehicles. This makes them a good investment that will provide a good return and save you money in the meantime.

At one point the manufacturing of hybrids was rather low key and something that was thought to be a fad. Hybrids autos have taken off in popularity, though, and every major manufacturer has started producing hybrids. They all have begun to focus efforts towards creating hybrids because they are the future of the automobile industry.

The bottom line is that when you are operating a hybrid electric vehicle, you will not notice a difference. It will run smoothly and operate the same as a gasoline car. The only difference you may notice is that they are quieter then a gasoline vehicle and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Toyota Prius

Hybrid cars that could never need you to fill gas? Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or PHEV for short. A PHEV is a hybrid electric vehicle that allows you to recharge the electric battery simply by plugging it into a wall socket.

There are several companies selling after market kits to convert your hybrid electric car to a PHEV. Conventional Hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius charge the battery while the car is running on gasoline.

2010 Toyota Prius

There are experiments being conducted with an additional electric battery in conventional hybrid cars such as the Prius.

Toyota is still the pioneering force why it comes to hybrid power plants. The major hold-up with electric vehicle is the technology of the battery packs.

Just outside of Tokyo is Toyota’s Higashi0Fuji Technical Center which is the main test facility for Toyota Battery technology. When coupled with plug-in technology, an owner can charge the battery that powers the electric motor before leaving the house.

Last April 30, the Toyota Car Company was proud to release the news about the Toyota Prius. This particular hybrid car model has reached enormous global sales of 504,700 units in a year. The hard works and efforts of Toyota Car Corporation finally are paying off.

The Toyota Prius was released in Japan early of 1997. Fuel-flex vehicles are using 100% ethanol instead of using gas. Toyota has made a positive reputation being a consistent high ranking car brand in the United States. Toyota is expecting more sales these coming years. And with the impressive sales result, car enthusiasts must expect more quality cars from Toyota Car Corporation.

Tesla Roadster

Tesla Roadster, the car that hopes to elevate plug-in electrics to lustworthy status. Not only does it have a design pedigree from famed UK sports car company Lotus, the engine, though quiet, promises to push you back into your seat. In a measely 3.5 hour charge the Roadster will take you 250 miles…more than long enough for most of us and farther than you could go on a tank of gas in your typical gas-guzzling sports car.

Tesla Model S

The Tesla Roadster will turn any driver into an electric car acolyte. The Tesla Roadster makes shifting gears, watching a tachometer, and listening to the note of a combustion engine seems tedious and old-fashioned.

While Tesla’s path to production hasn’t been as smooth as the Roadster’s power delivery, the company seems to be past the worst of its growing pains.

Dr. Thomas Weber, Mercedes chief of research and development, said, “As a young and dynamic company, Tesla stands for visionary power and pioneering spirit.” (Daimler will lean on Tesla to provide battery packs and charging electronics for the electric version of its Smart Car.) And in June, the US government gave its imprimatur to the company with a $465 million low-interest loan to produce the Tesla’s second vehicle, the Tesla Model S. Rumors about an initial public offering were surfacing by November. The company is busy hiring veteran auto industry engineers and executives.

Perhaps most importantly, the company is successfully delivering its 2010 Roadster at a rate of about 100 units per month.

2010 Roadster, All About Speed

In fall 2009, Tesla began delivering the 2010 Roadster, an upgrade from the 2008 model.

The enhanced creature comforts are welcomed, but the Roadster’s acceleration—especially from the Sport Model—is what continues to earn rave reviews from media.

Model S in Sight

With production and sales of the Tesla Roadster on an even keel, Tesla Motors will continue to slowly increase production numbers, until it reaches its goal of 1,600 units per year. The lion’s share of Tesla’s $465 million loan from the US government will be applied to building a plant to produce the Model S—the company’s first vehicle built from the ground up by Tesla. With the company on more solid footing, perhaps Tesla can avoid the pitfall of committing to an overly ambitious production schedule for the Model S, as it did for the Roadster.
